TDA2002 8W Hi-Fi Audio Power Amplifier

The TDA2002 is a cheap, 8W class B audio power amplifier that is designed for use in car stereos and portable audio systems. This is a 5-pin compact, reliable, and efficient amplifier IC. We can get up to 15w power by bridging 2 TDA2002 ICs together. It is capable of delivering 8W power with low distortion, making it ideal for high-quality audio amplification. It has a wide input supply range and high output current so this is capable of driving low impedance loads with high output current capability. The IC offers overheating, overvoltage and short-circuit protection. TDA2002 requires only a few components for proper working. This IC is available in a Pentawatt package, making it suitable for applications where space is a constraint.

TDA2002 Circuit Diagram

This is a typical application circuit for the TDA2002 power amplifier IC designed for audio amplification. Here we connected the supply voltage to pin 5 and pin 3
The Input Capacitor (C1, 10 µF) is used to Block any DC component from the input signal and the Feedback Capacitor (C2, 470 µF) Provides AC coupling in the feedback loop. It helps to stabilise the amplifier and sets the low-frequency response. C3 provides decoupling to ensure a stable DC supply voltage.
Output Coupling Capacitor (C5, 0.1 µF) Blocks any DC component from the output signal, allowing only the AC audio signal to pass through to the speaker.
Resistors (R1, R2, R3) is used to provide the feedback network R1 (220Ω) and R2 (2.2Ω), R3 (1Ω) are used to provide an output load network, helping to stabilise the amplifier and protect it from reactive loads.

Troubleshooting Tips for CD4067

My amplifier circuit is not working (not getting any sound output):

This could be due to various factors like loose connections, a muted amplifier, or a faulty source device. To find the fault first Check all cable connections between the amplifier, source device (player, phone etc.), and speakers. Ensure they're securely plugged in. Verify the values of resistors. Try it with a different source device to isolate the problem.

Getting only Distorted Sound:

Distortion can arise from blown speakers, faulty amplifier components, or clipping (an amplifier trying to output more power than it can). To solve this

  1. Lower the volume. Clipping often happens at high volumes.
  2. Check speakers for any tears or damage in the cones. Damaged speakers can cause distortion.
  3. If the problem persists, there might be a faulty component within the amplifier itself.

My amplifier output is very Low:

Low output could be caused by incorrect speaker impedance matching, low power input source or internal amplifier issues. To solve this

  1. Try changing the volume of the input source
  2. Verify the speaker impedance matches the amplifier's specifications. Using speakers with a much higher or lower impedance than recommended can lead to lower output.
  3. Check the temperature of the IC if it is high this will lead to the low output mode.

Design tips for CD4067

1.    Is a heatsink is necessary for the working of TDA2002?

Yes, a heatsink is generally necessary for the proper functioning of the TDA2002. The TDA2002 generates heat during operation, especially when delivering higher output power. Without a heatsink, this heat can cause the IC's temperature to rise significantly.

2.    How to minimise the humming and buzzing sound?

A constant hum or buzz typically indicates grounding issues, faulty cables, or even interference from nearby electronics. You can follow the below steps to avoid or reduce the humming and buzzing sound.

  1. Ensure all the ground connections in your system are secure.
  2. Try using different cables to see if the culprit is a faulty cable.
  3. Move the amplifier away from other electronics that might be causing electrical interference.

3.    What are the tips for designing PCB with TDA2002?

  • Ground Planes: Employ extensive ground planes throughout the PCB. This minimises noise introduced by stray currents and creates a stable reference for your signal circuits.
  • Trace Routing: Keep signal traces as short and direct as possible. This reduces their inductance and minimises signal attenuation.
  • Decoupling Capacitors: Place decoupling capacitors strategically near the power pins of ICs to suppress unwanted noise on the power supply lines.
  • Thermal Vias: Utilize thermal vias to transfer heat from hot components to lower copper layers that can act as heat spreaders.
  • Component Placement: Position heat-generating components strategically to allow for airflow and minimise thermal coupling between them.
  • Trace Width and Thickness: Ensure traces have sufficient width and thickness to handle the expected current without excessive voltage drops.
  • Bypass Capacitors: Utilize bypass capacitors with appropriate capacitance values placed close to the power pins of ICs to filter out high-frequency noise on the power supply.
