ADC0831 8-Bit Serial I/O ADC with Multiplexer

The ADC0831 is an 8-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC). It uses the successive approximation method for conversion. The ADC0831 has a serial input/output (I/O) interface and configurable input multiplexers that allow for up to 8 input channels to be selected. ADC0831 can sample and convert analog signals from multiple input sources, making it suitable for applications where multiple channels need to be monitored. The serial I/O is designed to compact with the NSC MICROWIRE serial data exchange standard. This makes it easy to interface the ADC0831 with the COPS family of processors from Texas Instruments. The serial I/O interface can interface with standard shift registers or microprocessors. Differential Analog Voltage Input: The ADC0831CCN supports a differential analog voltage input, which allows for increased common-mode rejection and the ability to offset the analog zero input voltage value. Also includes a voltage reference input that can be adjusted, this enables encoding any smaller analog voltage to the full 8 bits of resolution. The IC is available in a dual in-line package.

ADC0831 Schematics

The following image shows the ADC0831 application circuit diagram.

ADC0831 Circuit Diagram

The above diagram shows a system in which the ADC0831 device receives analog data from lm335. The controller is used to control ADC IC and to process the converted digital data. The analog signal is given at pin Vin(+). In differential mode, the voltage at pin Vin(+) must be greater than Vin(-) otherwise output data will not be generated by the ADC. Here we have connected the VREF pin to a 10K variable resistor. Now we can Connect the ADC0831's clock, data, and chip select (CS) pins to a microcontroller or another digital device for communication to get the readings.

Troubleshooting Tips for ADC0831

The circuit’s performance is not stable: Make sure that the power supply to the ADC0831 is stable and within the specified voltage range. Connect a 10uf capacitor in between the supply voltage pin and the ground.

Not getting any signals from the IC: Make sure that the ADC0831 is powered correctly according to the specified voltage levels and current requirements. Double-check all the connections, including data lines, reference voltage inputs, and analog input signals, to ensure they are properly connected.

No sensor data:  Check the analog voltage inputs. The positive voltage should be higher than the negative to get output.

Design Tips for ADC0831

1. How to minimize noise while using ADC0831?

Good decoupling is important when using high-resolution ADCs. Vcc should be decoupled with 10 µF capacitors to GND. To achieve the best from these decoupling components, they should be placed as close as possible to the device, ideally right up against the device.

2. How to give reference voltage?

We can use any external voltage divider/ regulator to provide reference voltage. Make sure that the grounds of ADC and voltage provider are connected. Also, check whether the reference voltage is in the range.

3. Is it possible to use this IC in the breadboard?

Yeah, while using a breadboard for building the circuit, ensure that the components are in nearby to the ADC IC.
