Infineon Technologies AG introduces the XDP8HD40S-1, a high-voltage hot-swap controller engineered for digital power-path protection and monitoring. This device is specifically designed for next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) server power architectures, supporting operations at ±400 V and 800 V direct current (VDC). It addresses the evolving power-management needs of AI infrastructure as rack power architectures transition from 48 V to higher-voltage distribution, ensuring safe power-module connection and disconnection while providing essential monitoring and protection functions for high-voltage server systems.

The XDP8HD40S-1 expands Infineon's power semiconductor portfolio, integrating crucial protection and monitoring capabilities required by advanced high-voltage AI server architectures. The controller is designed to complement existing power semiconductors and power-conversion components, facilitating comprehensive power-path control. Its hot-swap functionality is a key differentiator, enabling the safe connection or disconnection of power modules, converters, graphics processing units (GPUs), and server subsystems without compromising overall system integrity.

A core element of the controller's design is its digital Safe Operating Area (SOA) control, which combines programmable and preconfigured active protection features. This includes a unique variable-pulse SOA control mode, known as Boost Mode, engineered to optimize startup behavior while rigorously maintaining safe operation of the power switch. Furthermore, an integrated gate driver supports external silicon carbide (SiC) cascode implementations, utilizing a MOSFET and JFET combination, and is compatible with Infineon's OptiMOS MOSFETs and CoolSiC JFETs.

For comprehensive power-system management, the device incorporates advanced measurement and monitoring functions. It features 12-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for current and voltage measurement, offering approximately 1% accuracy for both, and approximately 3% accuracy for power measurement. Additionally, the controller provides analog power monitoring with 1.5% accuracy and integrated energy metering. These capabilities allow for precise monitoring of electrical operating conditions and energy consumption, crucial for efficient power-management implementations. Communication and fault analysis are handled via a PMBus 1.5 interface, which includes enhanced security features and a built-in black-box recording function to capture critical event information for debugging. The controller also offers configurable input/output overvoltage/undervoltage protection, support for external temperature sensors, overtemperature protection, and surge immunity protection.
