Molex Announces VersaBeam Mini to Advance Ultra-Dense, Eye-Safe Optical Interconnects AI Data Center
Molex introduced VersaBeam Mini on September 21, 2026, as an ultra-compact, 16-fiber Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) connector. It is designed to address critical space, thermal, and maintenance challenges prevalent in high-density AI and hyperscale networks. This connector builds upon the existing Molex VersaBeam EBO interconnect family, combining expanded beam performance with a Very Small Form Factor (VSFF) to achieve the density required for next-generation AI data centers and networking, all while maintaining serviceability, safety, and network uptime.
VersaBeam Mini's core differentiator is its 3.5 x 9 mm footprint, which efficiently packs 16 fibers into an ultra-compact form factor. This design provides a 3x density improvement over VersaBeam 16 connectivity, enabling network architects to scale up to 3,456 fibers within a standard 1RU panel. The connector is engineered to maximize front-panel real estate and simplify internal routing within AI data center hardware.
Further enhancing its utility, VersaBeam Mini offers 16-fiber granularity, which results in a 9x reduction in blast radius. This feature allows technicians to isolate, re-route, or hot-swap specific 16-channel lanes without affecting the entire system. An optional mass-insertion capability allows up to 9 VersaBeam Mini connectors, totaling 144 fibers, to be engaged with a single push, while still preserving the individual 16-channel serviceability afterward.
Molex designed VersaBeam Mini with a focus on manufacturing automation and technician safety. Its groove-based design, leveraging the 3M™ EBO Ferrule, eliminates the need for guide pins and holes, thereby facilitating high-speed robotic pick-and-place equipment for cable assembly. The zero-touch EBO technology reduces sensitivity to dust and debris, lowering requirements for frequent cleaning and inspection, and can reduce deployment and maintenance overhead by up to 85%. Additionally, inherent laser eye safety is incorporated to protect field personnel during routine maintenance and system upgrades.
