Murata Begins Mass Production of World’s Smallest 0201-inch Size Three-Terminal
Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has commenced mass production of its LLD series, which are the world's smallest* three-terminal low-equivalent series inductance (ESL) multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). These new components measure just 0201-inch (0.6 × 0.3 mm), significantly reducing mounting area by approximately 64% compared to Murata's previous smallest 0402-inch size (1.0 × 0.5 mm). This miniaturisation frees up valuable printed circuit board (PCB) space, particularly in compact electronic devices such as smartphones and wearables.
Modern electronic devices, especially smartphones and wearables, increasingly incorporate powerful integrated circuits (ICs) that demand a stable power supply. High-speed operation of these ICs can lead to rapid changes in current demand, causing voltage fluctuations. Maintaining a stable power supply is critical for reliable performance. Three-terminal capacitors, with their unique design featuring four shorter current paths, offer lower ESL compared to conventional two-terminal parts, effectively mitigating these voltage instabilities.
While the benefits of three-terminal capacitors are clear, their miniaturisation has historically been challenging due to the complex internal and external electrode structures. Murata overcame this hurdle through optimised electrode design and advancements in its manufacturing processes. The resulting 0201-inch MLCCs enable high-density mounting and ensure stable power supply voltage near ICs, even at high frequencies, providing designers with greater flexibility in component placement and circuit design for high-performance, space-constrained applications.
