Vishay's Space-Grade Planar Transformers Engineered for 28 V Input Forward Converters
Vishay has announced the SGTPL-28 series, the first among the devices built for 28 V input forward converters in industries such as avionics, military, and space. In comparison to typical planar transformers, this new 150 W Custom Magnetics series is more affordable, smaller in size and offers a higher power density. This improvement can be attributed to their ability to provide 40 % more winding fill.
The specific winding tech the series uses makes them a very flexible choice that can be tailored to suit various designs. Beyond their scope for forward converters, these devices can also be applied in switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) and active clamp/dual-switch forward converters. In these designs, their multiple secondary windings with a center tap let the transformers power up to two 12 V channels or four 5 V channels. They can function in temperatures up to +130 °C and can handle the input voltage range of between 18 V and 36 V. With a dielectric withstand voltage of 1250 VDC and a low leakage inductance of 0.5 mH, the transformers ensure strong insulation and efficient magnetic coupling.
With over-molded windings and MIL-PRF-27 level T, INST-EEE-002, and MIL-STD-981 qualifications, the SGTPL-28 series is engineered for demanding environments. They come in six screening options and are available at sampling and commercial quantities, with lead times ranging from 8 weeks for P-level screening to 26 weeks for S-level screening.
