STMicroelectronics Unveils Industry's First Waterproof MEMS Pressure Sensor for Long-Term Industrial Applications

STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader, has introduced the market's first MEMS water/liquid-proof absolute pressure sensor for the industrial sector. This innovative sensor comes with a 10-year longevity program, ensuring long-term availability to protect customers' designs. As the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) expands, ST's waterproof MEMS pressure sensors offer the required environmental robustness for data collection in challenging indoor and outdoor settings.

The ILPS28QSW sensor from STMicroelectronics features a sealed, cylindrical package with a ceramic substrate that provides high resistance to liquid permeability. It utilizes a robust potting gel and a lid made of high-grade surgical steel, securely sealed with an o-ring and epoxy adhesive. With an ingress-protection rating of IP58, the sensor withstands immersion in over one meter of water and can sustain up to 10Bar over-pressure. This rugged design makes it suitable for demanding applications in industries such as gas and water metering, weather monitoring, air-conditioning, and home appliances.

The ILPS28QSW sensor offers accurate absolute pressure readings with a selectable full-scale range. It boasts an operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C and provides high accuracy within 0.5hPa. Additionally, it incorporates ST's unique Qvar electrostatic-charge sensing channel, enabling the detection of liquid leakage and precise monitoring of liquid levels in home appliances and industrial processes. The sensor integrates digital features, including temperature compensation, FIFO memory, and an I2C/MIPI-I3C digital communication interface, with an ultra-low operating current of 1.7µA. The ILPS28QSW sensor is currently in production, priced from $3.00 for orders of 1000 pieces, and offers a versatile solution for power-conscious applications in need of robust and accurate pressure sensing capabilities.
