Quectel Expands RG660Qx 5G Module Capabilities for Future Railway Mobile Communication
Quectel Wireless Solutions has introduced an LGA version of its RG660Qx 5G module series, a high-performance, sub-6GHz 5G module platform. Announced on 3 August 2026, this new variant is specifically designed to support the evaluation of the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) and various railway applications. The RG660Qx aims to provide equipment manufacturers and railway technology developers with the necessary tools for early FRMCS evaluation and testing.
The RG660Qx module facilitates development ahead of the transition from GSM-R, the current railway communications standard. When paired with a dedicated evaluation environment, which includes an adaptor board and an EVB kit, the module enables comprehensive testing. This strategic investment by Quectel is intended to offer customers a clear migration path towards the next-generation railway communication infrastructure.
FRMCS represents the successor to GSM-R across European and international rail networks, built upon advanced 5G technology. This standard is crucial for enabling secure, high-speed connectivity vital for train control, signalling, operational communications, and other mission-critical railway applications. Its implementation is expected to modernise and enhance the safety and efficiency of rail operations globally.
