High-Performance IMU with Embedded AI and Sensor Fusion Targets Industrial Applications
STMicroelectronics has released the ISM330BX, a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) designed for industrial sensing and motion tracking applications. This IMU combines a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer, both with low-noise architecture and a bandwidth of up to 2kHz. It is suitable for vibration sensing in machine-tool condition monitoring, as well as for use in industrial and domestic robots, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), intelligent appliances, and motion trackers. Key features of the ISM330BX include an edge-processing engine with a machine-learning core (MLC) and a finite state machine (FSM) to offload the host processor and save system power. It also incorporates ST’s Sensor Fusion Low-Power (SFLP) algorithm for enhanced 3D orientation tracking, which can improve energy efficiency in robotics and smart safety helmets.
The adaptive self-configuration (ASC) feature allows the sensor to optimize its settings in real-time for the best performance and power efficiency. The IMU includes an analog hub for connecting external analog sensors directly to the edge-processing engine for data filtering and AI inference. Additionally, it features ST’s Qvar electric charge variation detector, which supports touch and close-proximity detection, as well as applications like water leak sensing.
