Compact and High-Efficiency USB Type-C AC-DC Adapter Reference Design with Programmable Power Supply (PPS)
STMicroelectronics has introduced STEVAL-USBPD27S, an USB Type-C Power Delivery 3.0 reference design with Programmable Power Supply (PPS) support. The new device accelerates the design of easy-to-use, compact, and efficient power adapters up to 27W with zero-power operation when no cable is connected.
STEVAL-USBPD27S reference design comes with the STM32G071 microcontroller (MCU) that integrates a complete USB Type-C Power Delivery controller on-chip, with the STCH03 state-of-the-art PWM controller and TCPP01-M12 USB Type-C protection IC. For enhancing efficiency the STM32G071 MCU has been programmed to handle the entire digital control section, from algorithm to control VBUS on the secondary side to ST’s unique and patented algorithm for adaptive synchronous rectification.
STEVAL-USBPD27S leverages the ST’s highly integrated STCH03 PWM controller that features built-in high-voltage start-up circuitry, primary-side constant-current output regulation, and advanced power management. The STCH03 delivers high efficiency, ultra-low standby consumption, and excellent dynamic performance for quasi-resonant zero-voltage switching (ZVS) flyback converters.
The STD7N65M6 MDmesh M6 primary-side high-voltage STPOWER MOSFET delivers extremely high efficiency with optimized switching behavior in hard and soft switching modes. The PPS of the device enables the output voltage to be adjusted in 20mV steps between 3.3V and 11V, as well as current limiting adjustment in 50mA increments, to minimize conversion losses during charging.
Along with a short-circuit protection between the VBUS pins and CC lines, the TCPP01-M12 provides ±8kV ESD protection for the USB VBUS and Configuration Channel (CC) lines, meeting IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4. The STEVAL-USB PD27S is available in a compact 59mm x 35mm x 21mm with a power density of 10.2 Watts per cubic inch for $95.00.
