8x8 Dot Matrix Display Module with MAX7219 Driver IC
The 8x8 Dot Matrix Display Module has a MAX7219 driver IC and an 8x8 LED Matrix. All common microcontrollers can be connected to this module by using a 4-wire serial interface. This 8x8 DMD Module requires only 3 I/O lines for driving the display. There is also another version of this MAX7219 8x8 Dot matrix Display Module, which is more popular and is smaller in size you can also check that out if interested.

Pin Configuration
The 8x8 Dot Matrix Display Module consists of 10 Pins. There are two pin series on both sides of the module. The pin series alongside the MAX7219 IC Consists of 3 driver pins (DIN, CS, CLK) to drive the display and two power pins (Vcc, GND) for powering the module.
The other one is just on the opposite side of the first one, covered by the LED matrix. Use these pins while connecting multiple 8x8 Dot Matrix Displays in Series with each other. These pins consist of almost the same pins as the first one; the only difference is the DOUT Pin which allows you to connect with the DIN pin of another Module.

Description
The MAX7219 IC is a compact and serial input/output common-cathode display driver. This IC is developed by Maxim Integrated, California. The presence of the MAX7219 IC on the 8x8 Display Module will give you a very easy interfacing experience with any development boards.
The 8x8 Led Matrix modules are available in different modules and each of the modules will have different pin configurations, but they have the same functioning pins.
Connecting an 8x8 Dot Matrix Display Module to an MCU/MPU
You can easily interface the 8x8 DMD Module with the MCU/MPU. Connect the driver pins (DIN, CS, CLK) to the digital I/O pins of the microcontroller. The following diagram shows the connection of an 8x8 Dot Matrix Display Module.
