LM336 2.5V Reference Voltage Diode

The LM336 is a precision 2.5V shunt regulator diode that is commonly used in Voltage reference designs. It has a dynamic Impedance of 0.2Ω with a wide operating current form 400uA to 10mA. It can also operate on high frequency upto 100Hz.

LM336 Brief Introduction

The LM336 acts like a 2.5V Zener Diode, the only difference is that it has three pins. Two of which are anode and cathode just like any other Zener diode and the third pin is the adjacent pin as show in the pinouts above.  This third pin can be used to adjust the breakdown voltage and temperature coefficient of the IC. The IC is used in application where a precise 2.5V is needed as reference voltage, a typical application circuit is shown below

As you can see the third pin being an optional pin is not used in this circuit, you can refer to the datasheet at the bottom of this page to know the other possible application circuits for this IC. The advantage of LM336 over ordinary Zener diode is it low impedance value (0.2Ω) and wide operating current. Further the third pin on LM336 improves the performance of the circuit by optimizing the breakdown voltage and temperature coefficient value. The IC is commonly used in 5V digital systems to provide 2.5V reference voltage; also since it operates as a shunt regulator it can provide both positive and negative voltage references.
