Nova PM Sensor SDS011

The Nova PM Sensor, SDS011 is a very recent Air Quality Sensor developed by Nova Fitness. It works on the principle of laser scattering and can get the particle concentration between 0.3 to 10μm in the air. This sensor consists of a small fan, air inlet & outlet valve, laser diode, and photodiode. It works with a nominal 4.7V to a maximum of 5.3 VDC supply voltage. However, it typically works with 5.0V DC voltage and requires a maximum of 100mA current. This sensor comes with the accompanying cable and 'USB to serial converter' for connecting the sensor to a computer directly if needed.

SDS011 Sensor - Overview

The Nova PM sensor is designed with a built-in fan to ensure proper air circulation to a chamber with a laser diode, where the size and amount of PM are determined. As mentioned earlier, it works on the principle of laser scattering. The air enters through the air inlet where a light source (Laser) illuminates the particles and the scattered light is transformed into a signal by a photodetector. These signals are then amplified and processed to get the particle concentration of PM2.5 and PM10. The laser diode used in this sensor is a high-quality diode and its service life is up to 8000 hours.
