OMNIVISION, a leading global developer of semiconductor solutions, has introduced the new OAX7700 ultralow-power ASIC. Announced at AutoSens Europe, this always-on vision (AOV) AI companion processor is designed to upgrade existing exterior camera solutions, such as surround-view systems (SVS), into ultralow-power edge AI-based parking surveillance systems.
The OAX7700 ASIC integrates a neural processing unit (NPU) to support advanced edge AI functions like human presence detection, person and object detection, and distance measurement. This innovation enables feature customization and over-the-air updates for always-on parking surveillance camera systems, aligning with the industry's shift towards software-defined vehicles. The OAX7700 significantly reduces the processing burden on the central compute platform while enabling faster and more efficient decision-making directly at the edge.
In its always-on operation mode, the OAX7700 allows cameras to continuously monitor a vehicle's surroundings with minimal power consumption. Upon detecting an event, it instantly switches to normal mode, recording five to 10 seconds of pre-roll video. This pre-roll footage provides crucial forensic evidence and allows the electronic control unit to validate triggers, helping to eliminate false alarms caused by environmental factors like wind or debris.
The OAX7700 stands out by consuming 97% less power than existing parking surveillance solutions currently on the market. Its NPU also empowers customers to develop and deploy their own AI-based algorithms on the chipset, extending functionality beyond security while maintaining exceptionally low power consumption and supporting sophisticated over-the-air updates throughout the vehicle's lifetime.
