Space CSAC-SA65 Combines Atomic Clock Accuracy

Microchip Technology has introduced the Space CSAC-SA65, a Chip Scale Atomic Clock specifically engineered to provide precise timing capabilities for space systems. This new device expands Microchip's existing portfolio of atomic clocks and is designed to meet the increasing demand within the New Space market for more compact and cost-effective space hardware, particularly for short-duration missions.

The Space CSAC-SA65 offers a compact and low-power alternative to traditional, more robust radiation-hardened timing solutions. It aims to assist developers in reducing the size, weight, power, and overall cost of their systems while maintaining high accuracy. Building upon the legacy of Microchip’s Space CSAC-SA45, this enhanced version extends radiation tolerance to at least 30 kRad and operates across an extended temperature range of –40°C to +80°C.

With a power consumption of less than 120 mW and a volume under 17 cc, the device is optimized for satellite designs where size, weight, and power are critical constraints. It features built-in 1 PPS input and output capabilities, facilitating synchronization for satellite systems. Its inherent atomic stability allows for extended operational periods without constant reliance on external timing references like Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals.

Manufactured as a Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) product using radiation-tolerant commercial electronic components, the CSAC-SA65 is specifically designed for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) missions. Microchip indicates that this COTS approach can lead to shorter lead times and lower overall costs compared to traditional space-grade oscillators. The CSAC-SA65 is available for purchase under part number 090-02789-007.
