ROHM’s New Schottky Barrier Diode Tackles VF/IR Trade-off for Safety in ADAS Cameras

ROHM Diode Tackles VF/IR Trade-off for ADAS

ROHM introduced the RBE01VYM6AFH, its solution to the perennial VF/IR trade-off problem. This Schottky barrier diode (SBD) has a completely redesigned device structure achieved through proprietary architecture. It takes advantage of the low VF seen in rectification SBDs that are usually seen in power conversion circuits and repurposes this characteristic for image sensors. The device can be employed in ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) cameras and adjacent systems where increasingly higher pixel counts are in demand for better image clarity.

When light hits a photodiode that is turned off, there’s a chance of photovoltaic voltage generation. This is tackled through the implementation of SBDs, where a combination of both a low VF and IR is essential for efficient protection. ROHM’s solution brings VF below 300mV, at 7.5mA IF and a low ambient temperature of -40°C. It keeps the IR lower than 20µA at a VR of 3V, and a high ambient temperature of 125°C. These performance metrics translate to a minimized risk of thermal runaway and improved overall protection.

The diode measures just 2.5mm × 1.4mm and comes in a flat-lead SOD-323HE package and is qualified to AEC-Q101 standards. ROHM plans on continuing to add to the lineup with smaller packages to keep up with the miniaturization trend. $1(excluding tax) sample units of the RBE01VYM6AFH are available through major online distributors such as DigiKey, Mouser and Farnell.
