TMD2636 - Proximity Detection Module with Better Power Saving in a Space-Constrained True Wireless Stereo (TWS) Earbuds
AMS has launched the TMD2636, a fully integrated proximity sensor for True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds for using 30% less space than the available solutions. The proximity detection feature of the device automatically power-ups the earbuds when inserted into the ear and power down when removed. This feature provides a better user experience and improves power saving.
The TMD2636 sensor module integrates a 940nm infrared (IR) Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) emitter, IR-sensing photodiodes, sophisticated control circuitry, and a clear-mold overlay in a 2.0mm x 1.0mm x 0.35mm package. The sensor has an average active-mode current consumption of 70µA and 0.7µA in sleep mode. The TMD2636 has been designed in a way to provide outstanding crosstalk rejection, high immunity to interference from ambient light, and highly effective algorithms for providing accurate proximity detection. The I2C interface of the IC allows it to provides a patented solution for two devices to reside on the same bus, this simplifies the system design for dual devices.
The smaller space occupancy of the TMD2636 provides the product designers freedom to include multiple sensors or to integrate new functionality using components that could not previously be accommodated.
