VCNL36828P Proximity Sensor Establishes High Efficiency Standard for Consumer Devices
Vishay Intertechnology has unveiled the VCNL36828P, a compact proximity sensor designed for improved efficiency in consumer applications. This sensor integrates a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), photodiode, application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and dual I2C slave address within a 2.0 mm by 1.0 mm by 0.5 mm package. It features a 20% smaller footprint, 20% lower idle current (5 μA), and a 40% enhancement in sunlight cancellation (up to 140 klx) compared to its predecessors. Tailored for space-constrained, battery-powered applications, the sensor excels in proximity detection, offering a range of 200 mm and operating at a typical rated supply voltage of 1.8 V.Primarily intended for smartphones, smartwatches, true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones, virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) headsets, and smart glasses, the sensor enables automatic screen wake-up and turn-off functions.
The VCNL36828P features a programmable interrupt for setting high and low thresholds, reducing microcontroller communication. It employs intelligent cancellation to reduce cross-talk, a smart persistence scheme for accurate sensing, and operates with a VCSEL wavelength peaking at 940 nm (no visible "red-tail"). The sensor is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free. Its dual I2C slave address allows connecting two sensors without a multiplexer, reducing costs in proximity sensing applications.
