Ultra-Small Form-Factor Power Management IC (PMIC) for Charging Batteries and Power Delivery

nPM1100 Power Management IC from Nordic Semiconductors

Nordic Semiconductors has released a tiny footprint, ultra-low IQ power management IC for nRF52/nRF53 series SoCs and other compatible products. The new nPM1100 PMIC combines a USB-compatible Li-ion/Li-Po battery charger and a highly efficient DC/DC buck regulator in a compact WLCSP package for space-constrained applications.

The extremely compact form factor makes it suitable to be used in wearables, connected medical devices, and other space-constrained applications. The device comes with a 400mA battery charger and 150mA DC/DC step-down (buck) voltage regulator in a 2.075 x 2.075mm wafer level chip scale package (WLCSP). The PMIC ensures reliable power supply and stable operation and maximizes application battery life.

The products (nRF52/nRF53) can be used as a generic PMIC for any application using rechargeable Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer batteries. The high efficiency of nPM1100’s buck regulator helps in reducing the overall system power consumption. Besides, its 150mA current capability increases the current available for other system components from approximately 10mA to 100mA.

The device features an ultra-low quiescent current (IQ) of 700nA (typ.) that can be reduced to 470 nA in ship mode thereby disabling power output and removing the need for an external power switch and ensuring minimum battery lifetime impact on products in transit.

The nPM1100 input regulator gets power from either a 4.1 to 6.6V USB input or from a 2.3 to 4.35V connected battery input and it can supply a 3.0 to 5.5V unregulated voltage to the application at up to 500mA output current. The input regulator includes overvoltage protection for transient voltage spikes up to 20V.
