Power Integrations Unveils 4th Generation CAPZero™ X-Capacitor Discharge IC Family
Power Integrations has expanded its CAPZero™ family of X-capacitor discharge ICs with the introduction of the fourth-generation CAPZero™-4 device, targeting industrial and consumer applications. The CAPZero family provides a crucial X-capacitor discharge function, which intelligently disengages the energy-consuming discharge resistor in an AC-DC power supply. This resistor is only activated when the device is unplugged, ensuring safe power bleed from the X-capacitor while minimizing energy waste during operation.
Designed for enhanced energy efficiency, the CAPZero-4 family significantly reduces system no-load and standby input power by up to 1000 mW. The device itself consumes less than 1 mW, enabling zero-watt no-load operation, and offers a robust operating temperature range from -40 °C to 125 °C, making it suitable for demanding outdoor industrial environments. It supports AC-DC converters with line-to-neutral input capacitance ranging from 100 nF to 6 μF.
This fourth-generation device offers pin-to-pin and package compatibility with previous CAPZero devices, specifically serving as a drop-in replacement for CAPZero-3. Migration to CAPZero-4 primarily involves selecting appropriate external resistor values to meet the required X-capacitor discharge time. Power Integrations has a strong track record with this technology, having shipped over one billion CAPZero ICs since its introduction in 2010.
