Three-Chip Charger Solution from Diodes

Diode Incorporated has launched a three-chip solution that can be used in a wide variety of consumer electronics applications, including smartphone chargers and notebook adapters. These devices are designed for enhancing the performance of ultra-high-power-density USB Type-C power delivery (PD) systems. This solution includes a USB Type-C power delivery controller, a highly integrated Active Clamp Flyback controller, and a secondary-side synchronous rectification (SR) MOSFET driver.

The new AP43771V is a highly integrated USB Type-C power delivery controller which is compatible with Qualcomm Quick Charge QC4/QC4+/QC5 protocols and supports a 3.3V to 24V operating voltage range. With I2C and GPIO pins and built-in application firmware, this device incorporates both a one-time programmable (OTP) ROM for all the main firmware, and a multi-time programmable (MTP) ROM to accommodate user configuration data.

The AP3306 is a highly integrated Active Clamp Flyback controller optimally designed for offline power supplies to meet ultra-low standby power, high power density, and comprehensive protection requirements. This controller can be used with an integrated driver GaN FET, a Cascode GaN FET, or a MOSFET serving as the main low-side switch. Moreover, with integrated high-side ACF gate driver control, this device supports leakage energy recycling circuitry via a reduced-current-capability high-side MOS switch and the use of cost-effective components reduces bill-of-material (BOM) costs and board space.

The APR340 is a secondary-side synchronous rectification (SR) MOSFET driver optimized for use with the AP3306 Active Clamp Flyback controller. This device features a built-in pulse linear regulator and operates in constant current (CC) mode to safeguard the charging system. Moreover, by sensing primary MOSFET gate-to-source voltage, the APR340 MOSFET driver can output an ideal drive signal with fewer external components.

Availability and Pricing

The AP43771V controller is available in both W-DFN3030-14 and W-QFN4040-24 package options and is respectively priced at $0.49, and $0.52 each in 1000-piece quantities. The AP3306 controller is supplied in a SO-10 package format, while the APR340 MOSFET driver comes in a SOT26 package and are respectively priced at $0.41, and $0.14 each in 1000-piece quantities.
