LPS33W: Water-resistant MEMS Pressure Sensor

STMicroelectronics released LPS33W water-resistant MEMS Pressure Sensor protected by a viscous potting gel inside the cylindrical metal package with IPx8-rating specially designed for the applications area such as fitness trackers and other wearables, vacuum cleaners, and general-purpose industrial sensing. The LPS33W is combined with chemical compatibility, stability and accuracy. It comes with I2C, SPI and low pass filter digital interfaces.

The LPS33W is low power sensor and operates at just 15µA in high performance mode, with a 3µA low-power mode and 1µA power-down to help maximize runtime of battery devices. Also, with the benefit of IPx8-rating it can withstand salt water, chlorine, bromine, detergents such as hand soap and shampoo, e-liquids, and light industrial chemicals such as n-pentane.  With the unique sensor’s built-in signal-conditioning ASIC and unique properties of ST’s proprietary gel formula the LPS33W ensures class-leading 0.008hPa RMS pressure noise which allows outstanding measuring resolution.

The Metal package lid provides high corrosion resistance, and the cylindrical form factor is easy to use with o-rings in applications that require a sealed enclosure. Also temperature compensation keeps accuracy within ±3hPa over the operating range from 0°C to 65°C. A generous 1280-bit FIFO included which can store up to 32 slots of 40-bit pressure and temperature data, helping save extra power by minimizing intervention from the host microcontroller. Susceptibility to reflow-soldering stress during assembly is also extremely low, drifting less than ±2hPa and recovering normal accuracy in 72 hours which is more than twice the speed of other sensors.

The MEMS Pressure Sensor LPS33W comes in a 3.3mm-diameter X 2.9mm cylindrical metal case and in mass production priced from $3.60 for order of 1000 pieces.
