Infineon High-voltage BMS Reference Design with AURIX TC4x

Infineon Technologies AG has introduced a high-voltage battery management system (BMS) reference design, announced on October 27, 2026. This innovative solution brings advanced battery modeling, monitoring, and control capabilities directly to the Battery Management Unit (BMU), enabling the execution of computationally intensive battery models at the edge rather than solely relying on remote processing. This approach is designed to enhance battery performance and management directly within the vehicle.

The reference design integrates an AURIX™ TC4x microcontroller, which features a parallel processing unit (PPU). This PPU provides the necessary computing performance to execute advanced battery-management functions directly on the BMU. The complete solution combines three primary hardware components a Battery Management Unit, a Pack Monitoring Unit (PMU), and a Cell Monitoring Unit (CMU) along with a comprehensive software package, offering a coordinated platform for high-voltage BMS development.

A key differentiator of this design is the processing capability of the AURIX™ TC4x microcontroller's PPU. Infineon states that the PPU can deliver up to 30 times higher processing performance for workloads compared to a standard CPU. This significant computing capacity supports computationally intensive battery models, including machine learning, hybrid models, electrochemical models, digital twins, and equivalent circuit models, facilitating more detailed battery-state estimation and prediction.

These advanced modeling capabilities enable optimization of battery load profiles, charging strategies, cell utilization, and driving range. Infineon highlights potential benefits such as extending battery lifetime by up to 30 percent, enabling battery designs with up to 20 percent fewer cells, or supporting longer driving range with an unchanged battery configuration. Furthermore, the additional processing performance may allow charging times to be reduced by up to 20 percent in various application scenarios.
