18650 Lithium Battery Protection Board

The Lithium battery protection board is a small size board that provides protection against short-circuit, overcharge and overdischarge. The board comes with pre-soldered Nickel strips which makes it a ready-to-use module with 18650 cells.

Circuit Diagram and Working 

The module DW01 is a battery protection IC designed to protect lithium-ion/polymer batteries from the following Overcharge, Over-discharge, Overcurrent, and Short circuit.

 

The package requires fewer components to perform protection. In addition, the small package is perfect to fit in any given space of the battery.

18650 Lithium Battery Protection Board Circuit

The chip is equipped with two protection pins, OD and OC, which are responsible for over-discharge and overcharge, respectively. The pins are connected to two N-channel MOSFETs. These MOSFETs are responsible for controlling and handling the protection of the battery. Three used cases can be explained as follows.

 

1. Overcharge - In the case of overcharging, the DW01 controller disconnects the MOSFET connected at OD, allowing it to completely disconnect the battery. This typical example not only protects the battery but also protects the circuit connected (if any).

 

2. Over-Discharge - n the case of over-discharging, the DW01 controller disconnects the MOSFET connected at OD, allowing it to completely disconnect the battery. This typical example not only protects the battery but also protects the circuit connected (if any).

 

3. Short Circuit - When there is a short circuit, the DW01 completely isolates the battery and protects the battery from getting damaged. This also restores the power within seconds, allowing the circuit to be back in function when the short circuit is removed.
